Eligibility for Italian Citizenship
You may be eligible for Italian citizenship if:
- Direct Lineage:
- Your parent was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth.
- Both your parents were born in Italy and were Italian citizens at the time of your birth (for births after January 1, 1948).
- Grandparental Lineage:
- Your paternal or maternal grandparent was born in Italy and was an Italian citizen at the time of your parent’s birth.
You may not be eligible if:

- 1912 Naturalization Rule: Your ancestor naturalized in another country before July 1, 1912.
- 1948 Birth Rule: You were born before January 1, 1948, and your parent was a naturalized citizen of another country.
- Renunciation of Citizenship: An ancestor formally renounced Italian citizenship.
